Terms of Service

Effective date: August 21, 2026

1. Agreement to These Terms

By using CharacterPractice.com (the “Service”), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

2. What the Service Does

CharacterPractice.com provides free, browser-based tools for practicing handwriting of characters from Japanese (hiragana, katakana, kanji), Chinese, Korean, Thai, and other writing systems. Features include a handwriting canvas, stroke-order animation, quizzes, and vocabulary tracing. Availability of specific features varies by language and script.

You can use the basic features of this service (Character Practice) anonymously with no account. Some features — such as syncing your progress across devices — require signing in.

3. Accounts

Sign-in is provided through Clerk using a Google account. By signing in, you agree that:

4. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

5. Your Practice Data

Anonymous users’ progress is stored in the browser (localStorage) and never sent to our servers. Signed-in users’ progress is stored in our database so it can be synced across devices. See the Privacy Policy for details on what is collected and how you can delete it.

6. Intellectual Property

The site’s design, code, and original text are the property of CharacterPractice.com. Character data (stroke order, glyphs, romanization) is sourced from public and open datasets. In particular, animated stroke-order data is provided by the KanjiVG project (© Ulrich Apel, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0); attribution is shown on every page that displays it. You may use the Service for personal study, teaching, and non-commercial purposes without restriction.

The core practice tools on CharacterPractice.com remain free. Some advanced features are offered through paid subscription plans, such as Japanese Plus ($3 / month or an equivalent annual rate). The current price, billing cycle, and included features for each plan are shown on the checkout page before you subscribe. By subscribing, you agree to the following terms:

Billing. Subscription fees are billed in advance according to the plan you choose (monthly or annual). Payments are processed by Lemon Squeezy, which acts as the Merchant of Record and issues your receipt.

Automatic renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period at the then-current price for your plan, unless you cancel before the renewal date.

Cancellation. You can cancel your subscription at any time from the My PageManage subscription link, which takes you to the Lemon Squeezy customer portal. After cancelling, your paid features remain active through the end of the current billing period; no further charges will be made after that.

Refunds. Cancellations made during an active billing period do not qualify for prorated or partial refunds, and deleting your account forfeits any remaining subscription period. Mandatory consumer-protection rights under the law of your country of residence are preserved — for example, applicable statutory withdrawal or cooling-off rights.

Taxes. Prices are displayed exclusive of taxes. Where applicable, VAT, GST, JCT (Japanese Consumption Tax), sales tax, or similar charges are calculated and added at checkout based on your billing location, and are collected and remitted by Lemon Squeezy as Merchant of Record.

Price and feature changes. We may change subscription prices or the features included in a plan from time to time. We will give active subscribers at least 30 days’ notice of any material change (by email or an in-app notice). You may cancel before the change takes effect if you do not wish to continue on the new terms.

Failed payments. If a renewal payment fails, paid features are paused immediately and your account reverts to the free tier while the payment is retried. You can update your payment method any time from My Page to restore access; a successful capture reinstates your paid features automatically. If the payment cannot be collected after our payment processor’s retry period, the subscription lapses permanently and would need to be re-purchased to regain paid features.

Account deletion vs. cancellation. Cancelling a subscription keeps your account — you stay signed in and keep your practice progress on the free tier. Deleting your account is a separate action that cancels any active subscription and removes your account data as described in the Privacy Policy.

8. Third-Party Services

The Service relies on third-party providers, including Clerk (authentication), Neon (database), Vercel (hosting), Lemon Squeezy (payments and Merchant of Record for paid subscriptions), and Google Analytics (usage analytics). Your use of the Service is also subject to those providers’ own terms and privacy policies to the extent your data is processed by them.

9. AI Content Disclaimer

The Service uses artificial intelligence and automated systems to generate content, including English translations of vocabulary, example sentences, quiz distractors, grammar notes, and synthesized native-audio pronunciations (produced with neural text-to-speech).

While we strive for quality and accuracy, AI-generated outputs may contain errors, inaccuracies, omissions, awkward phrasing, or cultural misunderstandings. Text-to-speech pronunciations may not always match the natural intonation, pitch accent, or regional variation preferred by native speakers.

We do not guarantee that any AI-generated content on the Service is fully accurate, reliable, complete, or appropriate for all contexts. AI-generated content is provided for language-learning support only and is not official educational coursework, professional linguistic advice, or a substitute for instruction from a qualified teacher.

You are responsible for verifying any information independently before relying on it — for example, when preparing for exams, when using material in a professional or academic setting, or when studying vocabulary for real-world use. If you find an error, please let us know via the contact channel in Section 17 so we can improve the content.

10. Service “As Is”

The Service is provided free of charge (or on a paid subscription for optional features) and “as is,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not guarantee that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that practice data will never be lost.

11. Bug Reports and Feedback

If you encounter a bug, unexpected behavior, or inaccurate content, please let us know via the contact channel in Section 17. We aim to address reported issues as quickly as reasonably possible, though bug reports do not create any service-level commitment beyond what is stated in these Terms.

12. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, CharacterPractice.com is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the Service, including loss of practice data, loss of profits, or any other loss.

13. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will update the effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of the Service after an update means you accept the revised Terms. For material changes, we may also notify signed-in users by email or by a notice on the site.

14. Termination

You may stop using the Service and request account deletion at any time. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, at our discretion.

15. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution

These Terms are governed by the laws of Japan, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Terms that cannot be resolved through good-faith negotiation shall be submitted to the Tokyo District Court as the agreed court of first instance for non-consumer disputes.

Consumers retain the right to bring claims before, and to defend claims in, the courts of their country or place of habitual residence where such rights cannot be waived by law. Nothing in these Terms constitutes a waiver of any non-waivable statutory right.

EU consumers: under Regulation (EU) No 524/2013 the European Commission provides an Online Dispute Resolution platform at ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr. We are not obliged to participate in ODR proceedings but you are entitled to use the platform.

16. Specified Commercial Transactions Disclosure

For paid subscriptions, the disclosure required under Japan’s Act on Specified Commercial Transactions (特定商取引法) — including seller and operator details, pricing, payment methods, billing timing, cancellation, and refund policy — is available on the Specified Commercial Transactions Disclosure page.
