Privacy Policy

1. Overview

CharacterPractice.com is designed to work anonymously by default. You can practice the basic features of this service (Character Practice) without an account or login. Signing in unlocks features such as syncing your progress across devices — and that’s the only reason we’d collect personal information from you.

2. What We Collect

We rely on the following processors to run the service: Clerk (authentication), Neon (Postgres database for account and practice data), Vercel (hosting and edge delivery), Cloudflare (R2 audio storage and CDN edge logs), LemonSqueezy (payments, Merchant of Record for paid plans), and Google Analytics (consent-gated in the EU). Each processor is bound by a Data Processing Addendum; cross-border transfers rely on Standard Contractual Clauses where applicable.

If you are not signed in:

• Usage analytics — page views, general device type, and rough geographic region, collected via Google Analytics.
• Practice progress in your browser — stored locally via localStorage. This never leaves your device.

If you sign in:

• Name and email address — provided by Google via our authentication provider Clerk when you sign in.
• Practice progress — which characters you have completed and when, stored in our database so it can be synced across devices.
• Preferences — such as your email marketing consent choice, your primary learning language, and other account settings, stored with your account or in your browser.
• Subscription and billing metadata — if you subscribe to a paid plan such as Japanese Plus, LemonSqueezy (our Merchant of Record) processes your payment. LemonSqueezy passes us limited billing metadata — your subscription status, plan, renewal date, the last four digits of your card, name on card, and billing country — which we store so you can view and manage your subscription. We do not receive or store your full card number or other sensitive payment details; those stay with LemonSqueezy.
• The same analytics as above.

We do not collect: your handwriting strokes, drawing input, your full payment card number, or any content beyond the fields listed above.

3. How We Use Your Information

• To deliver the Service — authenticate you, sync your practice progress, remember your preferences.
• To improve the Service — understand which features are used and where users get stuck, based on anonymous / aggregate analytics.
• To send email updates, only if you have opted in to marketing consent. See section 4.
• To provide paid features — verify your subscription status via LemonSqueezy and let you view or cancel your subscription.
• To respond to your requests, such as account deletion or support questions.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising to you.

4. Email Marketing

When you sign in for the first time, we ask whether you’d like to receive occasional emails about new features, updates, and study tips. The checkbox in your Settings is on by default; you can turn it off at any time from your My Page → Settings. If you receive a marketing email, every message will also include a one-click unsubscribe link.

Turning off marketing consent does not affect essential emails required to run your account (for example, account-security notifications).

5. Cookies and Local Storage

We use a small number of cookies and browser storage mechanisms:

• Session cookies set by Clerk to keep you signed in.
• Analytics cookies set by Google Analytics.
• Checkout cookies set by LemonSqueezy when you go through the payment flow for a paid plan.
• localStorage on your device to remember your practice progress (when anonymous) and your UI preferences.

You can clear cookies and localStorage at any time through your browser’s settings. Doing so may sign you out and reset any locally-stored anonymous progress.

Partner links. Some pages link to partner products, sometimes with a referral tag so the partner can credit the visit. These sites have their own privacy policies.

6. Data Retention

• Account data is retained as long as your account exists.
• Progress data is retained as long as your account exists, and is deleted when you delete your account.
• Subscription records we hold are retained for the life of your account. Payment records held by LemonSqueezy may be retained for longer to comply with tax and accounting law.
• Analytics data is retained by Google Analytics for 14 months (the GA4 default we have selected).
• localStorage data on your device is retained until you clear it or your browser removes it.

7. Your Rights

You have the right to:

• Access a summary of the personal data associated with your account.
• Correct your display name and preferences from the Settings page.
• Delete your account and all associated data at any time from My Page → Settings. Deletion is immediate: your account, practice progress, and subscription records are removed as soon as you confirm.
• Opt out of marketing email at any time from Settings or via the unsubscribe link in any email.
• Object or restrict certain kinds of processing, where applicable law grants that right.

8. Children’s Privacy

CharacterPractice.com is not directed at children. You must be at least 13 years old, or the minimum digital-consent age in your country if that age is higher (in parts of the EU this can be up to 16 under GDPR Article 8; in the UK the Age-Appropriate Design Code applies additional protections to anyone under 18). If you believe a child below the applicable age has signed in, please contact us and we will delete the account.

9. International Data Transfers

Your data may be transferred to and processed in countries where our third-party service providers operate their infrastructure. The specific regions are determined by each provider listed in Section 2, not by us directly. We take appropriate measures to ensure such transfers comply with applicable data protection laws and maintain adequate safeguards for your personal information. We rely on each sub-processor’s published Data Processing Addenda (DPAs) and, where applicable, EU Standard Contractual Clauses as the legal basis for cross-border transfers. Where local law grants stronger data-protection rights, those rights still apply to you.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the effective date at the top of this page. For material changes, we may also notify signed-in users by email or by a visible notice on the site.
